A labor of love for Albany area preservationists – A Restoration in Progress
St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church is located at 38 Ten Broeck Street in the City of Albany, New York. The church first opened in 1860, designed by Irish born architect Patrick Keely. Since its closing in the 1990s, the de-sanctified place of worship has been deteriorating. Turned over to the City of Albany in 2003 by eminent domain, the church has had a succession of owners leading to its current condition. Now listed in the National Registry of Historic Places the Gothic Revival style building has many decorative features. Its steeple can been seen miles away and has long been a recognizable part of Albany’s skyine. Although in disrepair, there has been a concerted restoration effort by several preservation groups including Historic Albany Foundation, local arts organizations including Albany Underground Artists and local Hudson Valley sustainability advocates, the Chefs Consortium.
