Litchfield, at the time of the first church, was a frontier town and was a sparsely settled community. The church had a dozen or so families. By the time of the American Revolution the congregation had grown substantially in size. In the Anglican Church of England, as it was called, members were required to swear allegiance to the King and Archbishop of England. When the Church found disfavor with the Continental Army it became a target of abuse. The second church was a larger structure and during this time membership increased with the separation from English allegiance and a reorganization to become the Episcopal Church. The third church replaced the 1812 structure to accommodate increased membership. By the end of the century the wooden church had fallen into disrepair, lost its steeple in a winter storm, and needed replacement or substantial repair. The current church was the solution.
