A monument to honor the memory of the men KIA in the Battle of Iwo Jima during WWII. It is the only monument built by survivors of the battle. It is similar, but not a replica, of the Marine Corps Memorial in Washington D. C. It was unveiled on February 23, 1995, the 50th Anniversary of the historic flag raising on Mount Suribachi. There is an eternal flame, chaplians and medical corps memorial also on site. There were 6,821 American Servicemen killled in the Battle of Iwo Jima fought between February 19, 1945 and March 26, 1945.
