One of Southern Vermont's finest old taverns . . . Logging and milling lumber was the mainstay of the economy in the Deerfield Valley from the late 1700's to the 1930's. When The Old Red Mill was a working sawmill, it was at the heart of this industry. The first mill which occupied this site was built in 1828 by Richard Waste, but was destroyed by fire in 1903. The present structure was built by the Choate Mfg. Company for the purpose of milling lumber for school desks. Across the river is the site of the earliest mill in the Deerfield Valley which was built in 1783. The mill pond created by the large earthen dam drove the maze of pulleys, belts and circular saws, but in the flood of 1939, the dam was destroyed and the milling stopped. The old shafts, sheaves and saws were preserved, however, and now add character to the restaurant which occupies the first floor. Today, as a restaurant and inn for skiers and summer travelers, the mill is still at the heart of the area's economy--tourism.
